Evaluation of General Sources

For this post I will be analyzing two different sources that deal with the controversy surrounding a proposed copper mine at Oak Flat AZ. Oak Flat  is a sacred Native American area, as well as rock climbing area.

The first is an article in AZ Central titled: Copper Mining and the Fight for Oak Flat
AZ central is a .com website, which means that the domain is intended for commercial use. The author is Bob Young, who is a reporter for the Arizona Republic. It was easy to find information about him. It was written on July 10, 2015, and doesn't say anything about updates since then. There are some other articles linked, and all of the links are still functional. This is a current issue, though, so I expect that there have been developments in the story since July 10th. The purpose of the article is to describe the controversy and both sides of the argument. The graphics are of the natural beauty of Oak Flat as well as some photos of other mines in the area. I think that these images are there to give readers an idea of what Oak Flat looks like now and how it might change if a mine was built there. The author definitely spends more time on the opposition to the mine, so I think that he is probably a biased in that direction. The article also provides links to other relevant sites.

The other article that I read is Apaches Rally at Capitol, Vowing to Continue Fighting for Sacred Oak Flat
I found it on HuffingtonPost.com, which is a popular news site. The authors are Julian Brave (a Native Issues Fellow at Huffington Post) and Dayana Morales Gomez (a Politics Intern). It was posted in August 22nd and hasn't been updated since. The purpose is to provide information on the Apache's recent Washington DC protest of the proposed mine. It's fairly objective in its coverage. The graphics are all photos of the protest. It's hard to seperate my own stance on the issues from that of the author. When I read it I feel hatred for McCain and hope that the area will be protected, but I think that's my own preexisting beliefs coming through more so than a bias on the author's part. There are relevant links included in the article.
